Course Overview

This course covers the fundamentals and basic administration of the OpenStack open source IAAS (Infrastructure As A Service) cloud solution, widely used at private and public clouds. After a short cloud and OpenStack primer, it presents the architecture of OpenStack and introduces its base components in details such as the Horizon GUI dashboard and the OpenStack CLI, the Keystone identity system, the Glance image service, the Cinder block storage service, the Nova compute service, the Neutron network service and software defined networking (SDN), the OpenStack Telemetry solution, the Heat orchestration services and the Swift object store.

Besides in-depth theoretical coverage students also do hands-on exercises with all OpenStack components studied in their own OpenStack lab system.

Training Objectives

At the end of the training participants:

  • • Understand cloud computing concepts and cloud types as well as the features, architecture, core and further projects, releases and service distribution of OpenStack.
  • • Manage an OpenStack cloud with the Horizon GUI dashboard and with the OpenStack CLI.
  • • Understand and administer the Keystone identity service, including domains, groups, users, projects and the service catalog, and troubleshoot it.
  • • Understand OpenStack messaging with AMQP and configure and troubleshoot the message queue.
  • • Manage images with the Glance image service and block storage with the Cinder volume service, including volume operations, snapshots, backup and restore, encrypted volumes and quotas.
  • • Administer the Nova compute service: flavors, hypervisors, VM placement and scheduling, the instance lifecycle, host aggregates, availability zones and post configuration with config-drive and cloud-init.
  • • Understand Linux and software defined networking (SDN) foundations and administer the Neutron network service with the ML2 plugin, floating IPs and security groups.
  • • Use the Telemetry service for metering and alarming, orchestrate the cloud with Heat and HOT templates including auto scaling, and manage the Swift object store.
  • • Troubleshoot all the OpenStack components studied and be prepared for the Certified OpenStack Administrator (COA) exam.

Prerequisites

Basic Linux sys.admin, networking as well as virtualization knowledge.
